What Does AAUP-UNM Do For You?
The University of New Mexico Chapter of the American Association of University Professors promotes faculty interests and national AAUP policies in the areas of academic freedom and tenure, due process, shared governance and compensation. In recent years, the Chapter has engaged in the following activities:
  • Advising faculty members and administrators in personnel cases and creating a legal referral service for faculty
  • Lobbying in Santa Fe for improved faculty compensation and defending the faculty's right to organize for collective bargaining
  • Working for better University policies on academic freedom and tenure, free speech on campus, dispute resolution, gender equity, sexual harassment, research misconduct, conflict of interest in research, intellectual property, distance education, receivership and branch-campus governance
  • Supporting branch-campus and contingent (non-tenure track) faculty in their efforts to improve their working conditions
  • Sponsoring public speakers and discussions on the future of UNM, women in academe, the University budget, corporatization of higher education, intellectual property, and distance education
  • Conducting AAUP background checks on outside candidates for upper-level administrative positions
